Our firm’s roots reach back to the early 20th century. The story began with Emil Hofmann of Leipzig, which was the bustling hub of the world’s fur trade from the Middle Ages until just before WW II.
According to family legend, in the 1930s Emil crafted a fur coat for the wife of a politically connected customer – who returned the favour by warning him just in time to get himself and his family to safety.
After the war, Emil and his son Elias reunited to establish a new home in Frankfurt, where fur merchants were then flocking. They founded Hofmann & Son here in 1951 and their business soon prospered. They travelled the world buying and selling premium furs under conditions that are now hard to imagine, managing without jet aeroplanes, smartphones or the internet.
Today we draw on this rich heritage while also diversifying into new activities.
